لاہور کے زمانۂ قیام میں ایک روز معظمی سیّد غلام عباس صاحب قبلہ سے فردوسی کا ذکر آگیا۔ موصوف نے مجھ سے فردوسی کے سوانح حیات پر کوئی افسانوی کتاب لکھنے کی فرمائش کی اور اپنی تحقیق کے مطابق بہت سی باتیں نوٹ کرائیں۔ ہندوستان پہنچ کر میں نے اس سلسلہ کی کئی کتب کا مطالعہ کیا اور واقعات میں راویوں کا اس قدر اختلاف پایا کہ قوتِ فیصلہ جواب دینے لگی۔ بالآخر علامہ شبلی کی ’’شعرالعجم‘‘ کو رہبر بنانا پڑا مگر بعض مقامات پر عقل نے علامہ مرحوم کی رائے سے اتفاق نہ کیا۔ اس لیے خود فردوسی کی قیادت کی ضرورت محسوس ہوئی اور شاہنامہ کے چیدہ چیدہ اشعار سے داستان مرتب کرنا پڑی۔ جہاں تک شاہنامہ کی ابتدا کا تعلق ہے بلاشک و شبہ وہ طُوس میں ہوئی۔ ایرانیوں کی وطنیت اور فردوسی کا مذاقِ سلیم اس کا محرک ہوا۔ آغازِ تصنیف کا سال قرائن سے 365 ہجری قرار پایا ہے۔ کیونکہ فردوسی نے اپنے قول کے مطابق اَسّی سال کی عمر اور 400 ہجری میں شاہنامہ مکمّل کیا اور تصنیف میں پینتیس سال صَرف ہوئے۔ سلطان محمود غزنوی کی تخت نشینی 388ہجری میں ہوئی اور ظاہر ہے کہ اس کے تخت پر بیٹھتے ہی اس قدر شہرت نہ ہوئی ہو گی کہ فردوسی غزنی کا عازم ہو جاتا۔ دو چار سال بعد جب جود و سخا کا آوازہ گونجا تو فردوسی نے بھی ادھر کا رُخ کیا۔ اس لیے فردوسی کی طوس سے روانگی 390 ہجری یا اس کے بعد ہوتی ہے اور شاہنامہ مکمّل ہونے کے فوری بعد اس نے غزنی کو چھوڑ دیا لہٰذا اس کا زمانۂ قیام دس سال سے زائد سمجھ میں نہیں آتا۔ واقعات کے بارے میں نتیجہ اخذ کر کے قلم اُٹھایا تو یہ دشواری سامنے آئی کہ افسانوی کردار اس انداز سے کھیارے جائیں کہ حقائق مسخ نہ ہونے پائیں۔ اس ضمن میں مَیں نے جتنی احتیاط کی ہے اس کا اندازہ تاریخ داں حضرات کر سکیں گے۔
